Global beverage insights team cuts 66 hours of manual work per research cycle with automation

Each year, IWSR collects beverage data stored in thousands of Excel files from over 160 markets. These tend to arrive in different file structures and  formats which requires team members to manually copy, match, and reformat data before taking a step back to analyse what they collected.

Read on to discover how CloverDX helped IWSR streamlined these processes...

The challenge: Making large volumes of Excel files easier to manage

Handling thousands of Excel files each year created a workflow that was cumbersome, risky, and put strain on valuable team resources, specifically across the IWSR research teams. Additionally, the research team realized that this process had to change because manual tasks had become.

Off the back of this, the ISWR team wanted to overcome two main challenges:

  • Eliminating the need for manual reformatting: a process that previously consumed hours of effort as teams worked to clean and reconcile Excel files at scale.
  • Reducing the risk of human error: since manual data entry and spreadsheet manipulation often introduced mistakes that slowed down analysis and impacted data quality.

The solutions:

To streamline their workflow and free up time for higher-value tasks, IWSR used CloverDX to simplify how they handle data from clients.

A simpler, consistent way to prepare Excel files ahead of data ingestion:

CloverDX Wrangler helped the team take all their different Excel files and turn them into a consistent format. Researchers didn’t need to write code—they could drag, drop, and map columns so the data was ready for analysis. No more spending time organising inconsistent spreadsheet data.

Automated processing for repetitive, high-volume tasks that previously required manual intervention:

Time-consuming tasks, such as standardizing incoming files and matching data to the correct categories, were automated. CloverDX Data Manager then enabled automatic validation and reuse of past decisions, which freed researchers from manual work, reduced errors, and ensured a faster, more consistent data ingestion process.

David Green, Chief Technology Officer at IWSR says:
“Wrangler was key in allowing non-technical users to describe how spreadsheets were structured, helping us handle different formats reliably.”

The Results: Faster, scalable, and more reliable data processing

  • Time savings: Automation freed dozens of hours per research cycle, allowing the team to focus on high-value analysis and insights.
  • Scalability: Thousands of files can now flow through a single, consistent, repeatable pipeline—supporting growth without increasing headcount.
  • Accuracy and trust: Centralized logic and automated decision reuse reduced errors, while researchers’ final oversight maintained confidence in the data.

“Researchers receive prepared data ready to review. This is a marked improvement over hours spent manually matching, reformatting, and typing.”

- Sam Landers, Head of Product & Programs at IWSR

As one team defined the rules—how the data should look, how categories should align, and what validations mattered—the technical team ensured those rules were built into scalable pipelines that handled data in the right sequence. Together, they created a process where expertise and CloverDX automations worked hand in hand.

IWSR’s Chief Data Officer, Andy Noble explains why CloverDX automation was a game-changer for his team.
